State Street Bank Building
Kansas City, Missouri
SEA provided complete structural design services for Phase I and II of this office and parking complex. The 1,200-car parking structure is located underneath the building, so the space demands for the garage led to the use of 55-foot post-tensioned joists for the project. These large pre-stressed concrete joists made it possible to have 55-foot drive aisles in the garage and maximum space planning capabilities in the building above.
A unique structural challenge was encountered during construction...a historic rail tunnel was uncovered, requiring our engineers to design 21-foot transfer beams to carry the column loads to piers on either side.
Additional design services included a 50-foot retaining wall for the entire west elevation, and a cast-in-place stair that drops approximately 40 feet in elevation.
