Railway Express Building
Kansas City, Missouri
With a long history in Kansas City, the Railway Express building has been given new life as the District Post Office, thanks to a recent restoration and renovation project. Almost 40 years of vacancy left extreme corrosion and deterioration throughout the concrete and steel structure, leaving its future in jeopardy. The significant level of damage to this structure led to a massive amount of repair work. SEA used structural strengthening, reinforced concrete repairs and in some cases, replacement of columns and beams to repair the damage.
Due to the age of the structure, special testing had to be done on the early 1900s era steel. A special feature of this project was the restoration of an underground tunnel that connects the Railway Express Building with the Historic Post Office accross the street.
