Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Expansion:
Bloch Building
Kansas City, Missouri
After more than a decade of planning and construction, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art unveiled its latest masterpiece in 2007: the Henry W. and Marion H. Bloch Gallery of Art. This unique building provides 150,000 square feet for new galleries, a café and library in a structure that is primarily underground. The five components or "lenses" of the addition rise from the museum's east landscape. By day, sunlight diffuses through the glass panels to illuminate the art below. By night, the structure transforms into a light garden, as interior light glows through the glass panels, illuminating the museum's outdoor sculpture park.
SEA provided structural design services for the Bloch building and a new 457-car underground parking garage. A central plant and additional renovations throughout the original museum building were also part of this project.
Our work with the Nelson-Atkins Museum dates back to the original construction in 1933. Today, we continue to help the museum grow. As the Nelson-Atkins continues to acquire new pieces, our engineers work with the staff to create structural designs that can support the various displays. |
